Recently, during another “gluten free” and “try my best to eat grain free” adventure (due to health issues), I bought a loaf of Paleo Bread sold by Julian bakery. It’s not made with a single grain. Not one. It’s a great concept.
One morning, I tried making it as French toast.
Major NO. (should have snapped a picture of my face for this post, you would be laughing hysterically right now!)
Later, I tried again by making it a piece of delicious peanut butter toast.
Gross. Not even good. I’m sorry, Julian, its not. It’s just not.
(And for the record, I HAVE baked grain free bread myself in the past and eaten Udi’s gluten free bread with no issues. The Julian Bakery Paleo Bread was for convenience sake. But I just couldn’t do it.)
I grew up on white bread. Like the real kind. And I love the heck outta some French toast. Like, so much that when I make it for my daughter, I have to seriously restrain myself from taking a bite or five which happens pretty regularly.
This brings me to a massive realization.
If it doesn’t taste good, why the hell are we eating it? I understand if it makes our body feel better and we’re healing our health issues and whatever — but I just still think that’s a crock of crap.
We need to ENJOY and LIKE what we are eating. Yes, we need to nourish our bodies with good food. However, there is good tasting whole food out there. For example, Danielle Walker’s World Famous Grain Free Sandwich Bread makes the cut for me (when I’ve got the time and energy) and Udi’s Gluten Free bread toasted with butter and drizzled with honey is a birthday cake compared to the paleo bread I spoke about above! I don’t eat bread every day, but when I want to, it’s GOT to taste like the real thing.
So what’s a girl to do? If you flunk out with something like Paleo bread, figure out what you’re really after and try again. I know it takes money, and I know it’s frustrating. It’s especially frustrating if you don’t live near stores that carry what you need—but for goodness sake, DO NOT QUIT.
And PLEASE, PLEASE don’t eat stuff that doesn’t taste good. You can still practice really great self care that leads to an amazingly healthy and awesome-looking body without hating the foods you’re eating.
You know what I did? I put that pb & “paleo bread” disaster directly in the trash and pulled out some almonds and raisins instead. It was much more satisfying and enjoyable. Plus, I got the sweet and crunchy taste I was craving.
I didn’t white-knuckle my way through crap that didn’t taste good, and I still fumbled around and found an option that worked with what I was attempting to accomplish nutritionally.
You can, too. Do some digging. You’ll figure it out 🙂
I want you to Keep Going.
Do you have a disaster like my paleo bread? I bet you do! I want to hear about it. If you’ve got a minute, go into the comments below and tell me all about it!
